MF 165, Charging & fuel gauge problem

1 hour 1 min ago
I have been reading your replays & I must say a lot of people know a great deal about MF tractors but I do have a problem with my MF 165 & maybe you all could help me if your have a little time?
Long story as short as I can, it's a MF165, Serial # 9AI9I42I; it has a GM alternator with the volt regulator under the dash/gauges. When I got this unit it never did charge & the fuel gauge never worked. Just within the past few weeks I took off the hood & replaced & painted a number of sheet metal items & was able to look at the wiring & tank gauge /sending unit better. I checked the alternator & regulator & they tested good, I could not see any damage wires or cut wires, started testing the wires & gauges to see if one is shorted out, but nothing worked. Than I took off the sending unit line to the tank & grounded it to see if the fuel gauge would work & it did not, but when I but a jumper from the battery to fuel gauge it worked, so did the Ammeter & the alternator started charging.
Whatç—´ going on? The fuel gauge only has 2 wires to it one pink one going to the volt regulator & the other going to fuel sending unit.
Could it be I have the wrong regulator on it/? If so do you know what the correct one would be or a name brand & part number of one that would work?
Thanks for you time.

Trailer hitch insert

2 hours 55 min ago
Ok so a question Ive been thinking about...so on the insert for the trailer hitch I have mine dropping but thought about raising it so I don't drag the jack when crossing a dip or high spot.

The question is, does the insert lose any strength when dropped or raised?

Potential Dangers of Purchasing Online

3 hours 38 min ago
Earlier today, I came across another thread on TBN, where a member talks about the problems they encountered after purchasing a used tractor online, sight unseen. Their thread referred to another thread on another forum which linked to a Youtube video of the tractor prior to purchase. Based on the problems that they encountered I decided to create this thread to highlight the potential dangers of purchasing online.

Please note that for the purposes of this thread the brand and model doesn't matter because it could have been any tractor. At first glance, the tractor in the video below looks fine but if you look closer you may notice that something is wrong, can you spot it?

Kubota B1750 Tractor with Loader - YouTube
Did you spot the problem? I watched the video after reading about the problems the tractor had and didn't see it right away myself. You have to watch very closely. This is a prime example of why one should always evaluate any potential used tractor purchase in person, by test driving it, preferably under actual operating conditions, prior to purchase. Assume nothing, second guess everything, and trust noone.

Here is a link to the other thread on TBN which discusses the ongoing repairs being made to the tractor.

Need a roll over tractor

3 hours 54 min ago
Background- I'm a retired Extension agent, had responsibilities in farm safety. For the last 18-20 years we have used a "rollover tractor" as part of our safety demos, primarly with high school ag groups and some farm groups. the old tractor is a Ford 801 workmaster, with a frame to protect the body. We roll it one time with the rollbar, one without, and let everyone see what happens to the "dummy". Very visual, very violent. The problem is the tractor gets rolled 6-12 times/year--for the last 18 years. The poor old tractor is coming apart at the seams. To continue the program we need a "new" tractor". Something similar in size to the 801 seems to work well, we can transport, tow, turn back up right with the research farm equipment. The tractor does not need to run. In fact, we have drained all fluids, removed oil pan and radiator. Located in Ashe County, NC- Jefferson, just north of Boone, on the VA/TN/NC line. If you know of any "junked " tractor of this size that still looks semi-decent that could be donated (Tax deductible) or purchaced at a very reasonable price with in 150-200 miles we would be very interested. I am still involved with the safety days as a volunteer and would probably be the one to retreive the new "victim". Contact Charles_Young@ncsu.edu

what kind of scat is this?

4 hours 6 min ago
We found several piles of scat in our backyard. We have more than a dozen deer that travel through our yard in a week's time, but I always thought deer scat was in pellets?

These seem to be more like dog poo, but then again not so much.

Any one know?

Evapo-Rust

5 hours 30 min ago
My Dad passed away about 1 1/2 years ago. A couple of months back I decided that it was finally time to clean and straighten up his workshop. In the process of doing that I have been cleaning up tools. Some of the old tools had rust on them. I had read where some people were having good luck with a product called Evapo-Rust for this purpose. I picked up a gallon of it from TSC and poured it into a 6 quart plastic rectangular container and started soaking tools in it. I have to say I was pleasantly suprised! A product that actually does what it says it will do. It is not the cheapest stuff @ $21 per gallon but at least it actually works. It is also bio-degradable.

The picture below is of two 50/60's era conduit crimping tools. They both were rusted exactly the same. I soaked the smaller set in Evapo=Rust for about 24hrs, pulled them out and wiped them off with a shop towel.

Disclaimer: I have no association with Evapo-Rust, other than now being a believer that it actually works.... And no animals were actually harmed during this demonstration.

Alternator Battery Lug Thread Size ?

6 hours 14 min ago
Hi.

I'm in the middle of a ALternator Upgrade on my B2150.

The Kubota (Denso) alternator has a copper battery lug on the back of it.

I am supposed to connect the ring terminal at the end of my wiring harness to it.

But.. there was no nut on the alternator and no nut was included in the "upgrade" kit.

I have seen them on Alternator and they seem to be copper, but not always.

Does anyone have a clue what the thread size is on that lug so I can go searching for an appropriate sized nut to use ?

I assume since it's Japanese, it's a metric size.

If I had to guess... I'd say 10mm. But does anyone know for sure ?

Thanks, Tim

Oil pan drain plug gasket questions

6 hours 32 min ago
I'm doing the second oil change on my CK-20HST. I did the first change myself and had a friend watch and double check my work. I do not recall seeing a gasket on the oil pan drain plug. I do recall that the drain plug was remarkable easy to remove though.

There was no leak.

On this go round, I am sure I did not drop anything in the pan or in the surrounding area.

So the question is was I just lucky that I didn't have a leak? What does the gasket look like? Is a rubber or a copper crush type?

Finally, Can I get a gasket at NAPA or do I need to get to a dealer for an official gasket?

Thanks for any light that you can shed.

Farmall B hauling width

6 hours 38 min ago
I have a 1943 Farmall B. It was my wife's grandfather's and then her dad's. I had a friend of mine use his deckover gooseneck to haul it to our place in the country a few years back. Now, I am soon to be building a shop at my house and would like to bring it home to get her running and restore it to its former glory. Eventually, I would like to trailer it and take it to some shows or a church picnic now and then, but am not sure how narrow the rear wheels can be adjusted in. I have a 16' lowboy trailer and it only measures 77" inside the fenderwells. Can the B's wheels be narrowed this far? Thanks
